Spoonfoolery aims to teach kids to cook and bake

Spoonfoolery Creative Cooking & Baking, a demonstration and teaching kitchen for kids, has opened at 2113 Greenleaf St. in Evanston's West End.

“We are offering young people in the area the opportunity to learn how to cook and bake at home and to have fun doing it,” says Mamata Reddy, owner and executive director of Spoonfoolery.

“Young people can learn so much through an exercise in the kitchen,” she adds, such as “reading a recipe, measuring ingredients, working with a partner to complete tasks, sharing and caring for equipment and learning how to make something totally from scratch.”

Spoonfoolery will be teaching multi-step recipes to take students through doughs and toppings, batters and frostings, and even macaroni and cheese.

“I have a very picky eater at home,” Reddy explains, “but when my son is part of the cooking or baking process, he’s more likely to try it.”

The facility can accommodate classes of up to 16 students and special events up to 40 guests.

Classes are offered for ages 3-5, 5-10, and 11-14. Birthday parties, field trips, bridal showers and corporate events are also on the menu.

Reddy is a graduate of the French Pastry School in Chicago and taught culinary classes to kids aged 3-18 for eight years at the Gary Comer Youth Center in Chicago.

Reddy and her husband moved to Evanston in 2010 and are parents of a preschooler and toddler, as well as two middle-aged, very spoiled dogs.
